Creating our film on Menstruation and Endometriosis
This film was funded by NHS Southwest London with support from Kingston Voluntary Action.
Youth Out Loud! is a group of young people helping to improve our local health and social care services. Working with Healthwatch Kingston and using their voices to make health and care services better for young people.
When approaching the film on Menstruation and Endometriosis Youth Out Loud! members wanted to create a video which raised awareness about menstrual health as well as endometriosis as it is not well known for a condition that is so common, affecting roughly 1 in 10 women.
“Making this Menstrual Health and Endometriosis film meant a lot to me as I feel it is a topic that doesn't get spoken about enough, even though endo affects 1 in 10 women. I loved being part of the film and raising awareness that this condition effects young people too.” - Youth Out Loud! member

Youth Out Loud! members, supported by New Dialogue, worked with educational filmmaker Steve Slavin and Trust Grade Sexual Health Doctor Dr Tihesia Riley on the design and delivery of the film and met to discuss the information and ideas that could be expanded upon through the Youth Out Loud! website and social media.
As a group, members decided that the film and support pages on the Youth Out Loud! website should avoid being an ‘information dump’, instead focusing on key red flag symptoms of painful periods and raising awareness of endometriosis through testimony of what it is like to live with the condition.
"Endometriosis is a massive part of my life. As a clinician who often comes across people with suspected endometriosis, or people already diagnosed with the condition. As a friend of those who live with endometriosis, and also as a patient living with endometriosis myself. Being part of this film has been a great opportunity to bring that level of awareness to other people, especially those working with young people as they are a group who is often overlooked. I really do feel like I portrayed a realistic experience of living with the condition, as well as some important clinical information to ensure that people know when and where to get help" - Dr Riley
The group originally met to plan the content together. Between a second planning meeting and coming together to record the audio and visual for the film, Dr Riley and Youth Out Loud! wrote their own scrips which were shared and collaboratively amended before recording.
The films style follows a different format to previous Youth Out Loud! films, like the work on self-harm, sexual health and bereavement/grief. Previously, information has been presented as a text conversation between young people alongside a professional ‘talking head’. This time the film centres on the experience of a young person living with endometriosis and the challenges they face.
Youth Out Loud! would like to thank film maker Steve Slavin, Dr Tihesia Riley, Healthwatch Kingston, Kingston Voluntary Action, Kingston and Richmond NHS Trust and Southwest London NHS for helping us create this film and the information pages shared on the Youth Out Loud! website.
